AI + Journalism

Since the launch of ChatGPT in late November 2022, artificial intelligence has emerged as a valuable tool for the world of journalism and newsrooms, quickly taking center stage in a new wave of transformation in the media industry.

This technology represents a new exponential phase that adds to the different processes of change that journalism has experienced in recent decades, based on an accelerated path of digitization. Just as the arrival of the internet, Web 2.0, and social platforms transformed the media landscape and the morphology of newsrooms, AI has the potential to introduce a new reconfiguration of the information ecosystem.

In this context, the integration of AI into newsrooms is not just a matter of efficiency or technological innovation, it is also a deeply ethical issue that influences the essence of how the world is informed and understood. AI challenges traditional journalistic practices and implies an evolution in the perspectives and work dynamics of editorial teams.

As the media industry gives algorithms a leading role in content curation and distribution, it is crucial that the processes behind these decisions are open and understandable to audiences. This not only helps to build trust, but also allows for open processes to ensure that these systems operate fairly and avoid biases.

Despite the challenges they face, the media is finding valuable and unprecedented opportunities thanks to the adoption of generative technologies. Its proper integration allows newsrooms to optimize their workflows and offer deeper and more personalized coverage on a wide range of topics, which makes it possible to reinvent the link with audiences. Through the use of AI tools, they can improve the efficiency in the collection, systematization, and distribution of information, which allows them to remain relevant in a competitive and fragmented scenario.

If the year 2023 was marked by the “what”, discovering the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence for the media, the next two to three years will be marked by the “why” and the “how”; a new stage in which the integration of this technology must have a reflective and strategic approach by journalistic organizations.

Why an AI + Journalism Guide?

As a journalist, communications professor, and digital media consultant, I have been part of the communications industry for the past 20 years, experiencing the profound transformations that have taken place during this period.

Over the past 3 years, I decided to focus my activity on the intersection of journalism, artificial intelligence, and innovation to try to understand the dimension of this cross-cutting change process that impacts the media, and above all, journalism as a discipline.

Throughout this time, I have read research, written articles on the subject, given classes and talks, developed experimental projects, participated in interviews, and conducted training and consulting with media outlets and journalists in Argentina and Latin America.

Part of all that experience is systematized in AI Journalism, a guide focused on the integration of artificial intelligence into media and newsrooms that I wrote during the first six months of 2024 together with Telecom Argentina’s Redacciones5G program.

Unifying everything that is happening in the field of artificial intelligence in a single guide responds to a double objective: to learn and disseminate. The research, development, and presentation of this information not only seeks to structure knowledge in a coherent way, but also to provide an in-depth analysis of the link between AI and journalism. By sharing this knowledge, I intend for the guide to be a useful tool for journalists and newsrooms that are evaluating the adoption of this technology.

What is the Approach of the AI Journalism Guide?

One of the main features of the AI Journalism guide is its origin. It has been conceived and developed from Latin America, with a focus on local and regional media outlets. This perspective gives its content particular relevance, as it is adapted to the specific needs and challenges of newsrooms in the region.

The guide is not based solely on theory but also on a wealth of practical experience. Throughout its 71 pages, I have integrated a significant part of my work with media outlets and everything we have produced within the framework of the Redacciones5G program: training on the topic, analysis of applied cases, interviews with specialized professionals, platform research, and experimentation with generative tools.

The chapters of AI Journalism were written sequentially, but they can be read as individual units without losing their meaning. The idea is for the guide to be available as a resource within newsrooms, either downloaded in PDF format on devices or in print version, to be used as reference and support material during AI integration processes.

All the content of the guide is linked to its practical application in journalism, from the concepts associated with this technology to a detailed section on how to correctly create a prompt.

A Guide on AI Developed with AI

A portion of the AI Journalism guide was developed with the assistance of various generative platforms, primarily for matters related to formatting, style, and proofreading, areas where these systems excel.

Specifically, I utilized ChatGPT as a methodological tool to craft Chapter 3 on ethics, guidelines, and usage policies. This not only allowed me to explore AI capabilities in a practical manner but also to integrate this technology into the data collection and systematization process to make sense of the information gathered.

While writing the guide, I compiled numerous initiatives related to guidelines and usage frameworks published by various media outlets around the world into a collection titled “Synthetic Journalism.” To identify the guiding principles of the analyzed policies, I developed a GPTs, a customized version of ChatGPT trained on all the texts included in the 37 most representative compiled guidelines (you can find the list of media outlets on page 27 of the guide).

I then asked the system to analyze them and generate an initial general list of the common themes identified. After a second analysis process (also under human review) of the published guidelines, I identified several predominant guiding principles. These principles reflect a common approach to the ethical, responsible, and effective adoption and management of generative AI in the media industry.

Building upon this experimental technical development, the conclusion of the third chapter includes a proposal for ethical policies and frameworks that can be used by media outlets and newsrooms as a starting point to design their own guidelines.

Next Steps

Recognizing the global significance and interest in the topic, the AI Journalism guide was published in both Spanish and English. This dual-language availability ensures it reaches a wider audience, catering to those interested in artificial intelligence in journalism from around the world.

We will be conducting various presentations over the coming months. You can stay updated on these events and other developments through the Redacciones5G program’s social media channels (Twitter and Instagram). Additionally, you can contact us to request training for your media outlet or organization.

The guide serves as a springboard for further advancements in the intersection of AI and journalism. These developments will be announced in due course. Moreover, given the dynamic nature of AI technology, the original version of AI Journalism will receive updates in the future to ensure its continued relevance and value.
